Window on the south aspect of the choir by Morris & Co, 1914, posthumously reusing an earlier design by Edward Burne Jones.
Jesus College may well not be the oldest of Cambridge’s faculties, but irrespective it can nonetheless boast the oldest chapel. The current cruciform creating was formerly the monastic church of St Mary & St Radegund, a convent of nuns launched in 1157. This was dissolved in 1496 when the current college was started on the similar website by Bishop John Alcock with the previous convent church adapted to use as the existing university chapel, which involved numerous modifications to its framework like the demolition of numerous elements which includes the greater part of the nave. The present chapel is thus a minimized version of the initial church, but it is nonetheless distinctly diverse in kind from other higher education chapels, making its previous monastic use all the far more clear.
One ways the chapel from the north west by means of a cloister (much altered from its first point out) and it is immediately obvious that much of the nave has been changed by college properties, lessening it to similar proportions to the transepts. The central tower is sq. and rather squat, a late medieval rebuild soon after the foundation of the university.
Inside the truncated nave there would be a sense of starkness from the simple white partitions have been it not for the splashes of color from the windows and the richly decorated ceiling, all wonderful examples of Pre-Raphaelite artwork by William Morris and his circle, the chapel home windows currently being mostly crammed with a sequence of figures from cartoons by Burne Jones. The effect is wealthy and satisfying and has breathed new life into this ancient creating. The choir further than is partly hid by prosperous woodwork, the chancel monitor and the elaborately carved stalls which retain some noteworthy examples of late medieval carving. The choir by itself is a handsome illustration of Early English architecture with slender lancet windows, these getting crammed with Hardman glass, the only home windows not adorned with Morris & Co types.
Jesus College Chapel is a person of my absolute favourites, a delightful creating with some wonderful glass. Happily it would seem to be just one of the a lot more visitor pleasant faculties in Cambridge possessing generally uncovered it doable to wander about freely whilst someway steering clear of the crowds of travellers that sure other Cambridge faculties entice.
