Artist Statement
The platters I have sent to this exhibition blend quite a few ceramic traditions. The very first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots have been created to exhibit wealth and energy. They had been made to tell a story, to commemorate an function or a individual, and to display talent and problem the talents of the artisans who built them. The second custom is the Fish Platter. Fish platters have been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The 3rd and previous custom is the A single-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor by the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a custom as previous as the use of the content. I have usually felt that humor has been given small change as a critical emotion. Artwork work that works by using humor and has been actively excised from collections of critical artwork. It could be that we do not realize the perform of humor as properly as we have an understanding of the function of the other thoughts.
In the do the job offered I have tried out to inject some humor into the attractive / commemorative object. The platters are huge to give them a somewhat overblown feeling of their have importance and to be able to be seen from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the desk. The substantial sizing to fit the importance of substantial gatherings.
I have attempted to swap historical styles with objects lessened to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my setting or reflections of personal pursuits. Photographs of transform of the century technologies, (the Machine Age), are a private favourite. Subject matter make a difference ranges from humorous depiction of day to day objects to gender stereotypes. My skills as A draftsman are confined but appear to be to be suitable for the sort and high quality of impression that the subject involves. They have a cartoon appear as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.
The clay system, a pink earthenware, is heavily potted and would make no secrete of its versions and flaws. The glaze function is in the Majolica design and style and is accomplished really a great deal like a watercolor on smooth paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some might have an supplemental firing to Cone 018 for minimal temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment applying an electrical kiln.
