Artist Statement
The platters I have despatched to this exhibition mix many ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Artwork Pots ended up created to show prosperity and ability. They ended up manufactured to notify a tale, to commemorate an event or a person, and to show ability and challenge the qualities of the artisans who manufactured them. The second custom is the Fish Platter. Fish platters have been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and past tradition is the One-Line visible and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor by the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as aged as the use of the material. I have often felt that humor has been offered quick change as a serious emotion. Artwork work that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of really serious art. It may be that we do not have an understanding of the purpose of humor as very well as we fully grasp the function of the other feelings.
In the work introduced I have tried to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are huge to give them a a little overblown sense of their individual worth and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the desk. The huge sizing to fit the great importance of massive gatherings.
I have tried to replace historical patterns with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my atmosphere or reflections of individual interests. Images of change of the century know-how, (the Machine Age), are a personal preferred. Issue make a difference ranges from humorous depiction of every day objects to gender stereotypes. My capabilities as A draftsman are minimal but look to be suitable for the sort and good quality of graphic that the issue calls for. They have a cartoon glimpse as opposed to the crisp complexity of wonderful china.
The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and can make no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze perform is in the Majolica design and style and is completed really considerably like a watercolor on comfortable paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an additional firing to Cone 018 for minimal temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment making use of an electric kiln.
