Artist Assertion
The platters I have despatched to this exhibition combine numerous ceramic traditions. The very first is, The Palace Artwork Pot. Palace Art Pots ended up made to reveal prosperity and ability. They were being produced to convey to a tale, to commemorate an occasion or a particular person, and to demonstrate ability and problem the capabilities of the artisans who produced them. The 2nd tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters had been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Motion of the 1950s and 60s. The third and final custom is the A person-Line visible and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor by the use of the visible pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a custom as outdated as the use of the content. I have usually felt that humor has been presented limited shift as a major emotion. Art work that utilizes humor and has been actively excised from collections of critical artwork. It may perhaps be that we do not realize the perform of humor as very well as we realize the purpose of the other thoughts.
In the perform introduced I have tried out to inject some humor into the attractive / commemorative object. The platters are big to give them a marginally overblown sense of their individual relevance and to be in a position to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The large size to fit the great importance of large gatherings.
I have tried to switch historic styles with objects lessened to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my setting or reflections of particular pursuits. Images of turn of the century technological know-how, (the Machine Age), are a individual favourite. Subject matter matter ranges from humorous depiction of each day objects to gender stereotypes. My capabilities as A draftsman are restricted but appear to be to be satisfactory for the variety and good quality of impression that the subject matter needs. They have a cartoon glimpse as opposed to the crisp complexity of good china.
The clay overall body, a crimson earthenware, is closely potted and can make no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze operate is in the Majolica type and is completed incredibly a lot like a watercolor on gentle paper. The pots are fired two times. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may possibly have an further firing to Cone 018 for very low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment applying an electrical kiln.
