Artist Statement
The platters I have sent to this exhibition combine quite a few ceramic traditions. The 1st is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Artwork Pots ended up made to demonstrate wealth and ability. They were being built to notify a story, to commemorate an party or a person, and to reveal ability and problem the skills of the artisans who built them. The next tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters had been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and past custom is the One-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Motion.
Humor by way of the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a custom as previous as the use of the substance. I have often felt that humor has been given small shift as a significant emotion. Artwork function that works by using humor and has been actively excised from collections of really serious art. It may well be that we do not recognize the perform of humor as perfectly as we fully grasp the purpose of the other thoughts.
In the get the job done offered I have tried to inject some humor into the attractive / commemorative object. The platters are major to give them a a bit overblown perception of their very own importance and to be capable to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the desk. The big size to suit the great importance of massive gatherings.
I have tried out to switch historic styles with objects minimized to sample. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of private passions. Visuals of switch of the century know-how, (the Machine Age), are a own most loved. Topic issue ranges from humorous depiction of daily objects to gender stereotypes. My skills as A draftsman are constrained but seem to be to be ample for the sort and high quality of graphic that the subject demands. They have a cartoon look as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.
The clay body, a crimson earthenware, is intensely potted and would make no secrete of its versions and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica design and is performed very considerably like a watercolor on tender paper. The pots are fired two times. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an extra firing to Cone 018 for reduced temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere employing an electrical kiln.
