Artist Assertion
The platters I have despatched to this exhibition mix numerous ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Artwork Pot. Palace Art Pots were being made to show wealth and electric power. They were being designed to inform a tale, to commemorate an occasion or a individual, and to demonstrate ability and challenge the skills of the artisans who manufactured them. The next custom is the Fish Platter. Fish platters ended up a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The 3rd and final custom is the One-Line visible and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor via the use of the visible pun was a mainstay of the California Funk motion. Humor in clay has a tradition as aged as the use of the materials. I have usually felt that humor has been presented small shift as a serious emotion. Artwork work that employs humor and has been actively excised from collections of major art. It may well be that we do not fully grasp the perform of humor as properly as we comprehend the perform of the other thoughts.
In the function introduced I have attempted to inject some humor into the attractive / commemorative object. The platters are major to give them a slightly overblown perception of their individual great importance and to be in a position to be seen from a length . They are intended for the wall and the table. The big size to in shape the relevance of large gatherings.
I have tried to change historic styles with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my natural environment or reflections of own interests. Visuals of switch of the century technological innovation, (the Device Age), are a own preferred. Matter make a difference ranges from humorous depiction of day to day objects to gender stereotypes. My skills as A draftsman are minimal but appear to be enough for the sort and high-quality of graphic that the matter involves. They have a cartoon glance as opposed to the crisp complexity of high-quality china.
The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and makes no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze operate is in the Majolica style and is carried out very a great deal like a watercolor on comfortable paper. The pots are fired 2 times. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an extra firing to Cone 018 for reduced temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing ambiance making use of an electrical kiln.
