Artist Statement
The platters I have despatched to this exhibition mix several ceramic traditions. The initial is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were created to demonstrate prosperity and electrical power. They were being created to convey to a story, to commemorate an event or a human being, and to show talent and challenge the abilities of the artisans who created them. The next tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters had been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The 3rd and past tradition is the A single-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor via the use of the visible pun was a mainstay of the California Funk motion. Humor in clay has a custom as old as the use of the product. I have usually felt that humor has been provided small shift as a really serious emotion. Art do the job that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of really serious art. It may be that we do not fully grasp the perform of humor as very well as we recognize the perform of the other thoughts.
In the work introduced I have attempted to inject some humor into the ornamental / commemorative item. The platters are massive to give them a a little bit overblown sense of their personal worth and to be capable to be seen from a distance . They are intended for the wall and the desk. The substantial dimensions to in shape the relevance of substantial gatherings.
I have attempted to switch historical patterns with objects lessened to sample. Some of the objects are extensions of my surroundings or reflections of private interests. Visuals of transform of the century know-how, (the Device Age), are a private preferred. Subject matter ranges from humorous depiction of day-to-day objects to gender stereotypes. My qualities as A draftsman are confined but look to be satisfactory for the kind and high-quality of image that the topic demands. They have a cartoon appear as opposed to the crisp complexity of great china.
The clay overall body, a purple earthenware, is heavily potted and tends to make no secrete of its versions and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica type and is performed pretty considerably like a watercolor on comfortable paper. The pots are fired 2 times. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may possibly have an further firing to Cone 018 for very low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere applying an electrical kiln.
