The platters I have despatched to this exhibition mix various ceramic traditions. The initial is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots have been built to reveal prosperity and electric power. They ended up created to notify a story, to commemorate an occasion or a particular person, and to display skill and problem the skills of the artisans who produced them. The second tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were being a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The 3rd and last tradition is the One particular-Line visible and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor via the use of the visible pun was a mainstay of the California Funk motion. Humor in clay has a custom as previous as the use of the substance. I have normally felt that humor has been given small shift as a critical emotion. Artwork function that takes advantage of humor and has been actively excised from collections of critical art. It may well be that we do not realize the function of humor as properly as we comprehend the functionality of the other emotions.
In the perform introduced I have attempted to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are significant to give them a a bit overblown feeling of their personal great importance and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are intended for the wall and the desk. The large sizing to fit the relevance of large gatherings.
I have attempted to switch historical styles with objects lessened to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of particular passions. Photos of transform of the century technological know-how, (the Equipment Age), are a individual favourite. Issue matter ranges from humorous depiction of daily objects to gender stereotypes. My capabilities as A draftsman are constrained but look to be enough for the type and quality of picture that the subject matter demands. The clay overall body, a pink earthenware, is heavily potted and will make no secrete of its variants and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica design and is finished quite significantly like a watercolor on smooth paper. The pots are fired 2 times. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some might have an extra firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment using an electrical kiln.
