Artist Assertion
The platters I have sent to this exhibition incorporate several ceramic traditions. The to start with is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were being made to demonstrate wealth and electrical power. They ended up manufactured to tell a story, to commemorate an event or a individual, and to show talent and problem the capabilities of the artisans who created them. The 2nd tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters have been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Motion of the 1950s and 60s. The third and very last tradition is the 1-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor by means of the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk motion. Humor in clay has a custom as aged as the use of the content. I have normally felt that humor has been specified brief shift as a major emotion. Artwork work that employs humor and has been actively excised from collections of critical art. It may perhaps be that we do not fully grasp the operate of humor as well as we comprehend the purpose of the other emotions.
In the get the job done introduced I have attempted to inject some humor into the attractive / commemorative object. The platters are significant to give them a a little bit overblown sense of their own great importance and to be ready to be seen from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The big size to healthy the importance of substantial gatherings.
I have experimented with to change historical styles with objects decreased to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my ecosystem or reflections of particular pursuits. Photos of change of the century technological innovation, (the Equipment Age), are a personal favourite. Matter make any difference ranges from humorous depiction of every day objects to gender stereotypes. My skills as A draftsman are constrained but look to be suitable for the variety and top quality of image that the subject matter necessitates. They have a cartoon glance as opposed to the crisp complexity of good china.
The clay entire body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and can make no secrete of its variants and flaws. The glaze operate is in the Majolica model and is finished very considerably like a watercolor on soft paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some might have an extra firing to Cone 018 for minimal temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment using an electrical kiln.
