Constructed in 1905 / 1907 by W. D. Flatt as a summer months cottage in the Craftsman Design most favoured by him, the a person-storey dwelling has a substantial truncated hipped roof, with overhanging eaves exhibiting rafter tails (comparable to the eaves and rafter tails at the Burlington West coach station, built in 1909). The central chimney is constructed of the same big brick as the fireplace. The front elevation, facing the lake, has a substantial offset projecting gable. The verandah therefore created has a continuous band of eighteen-paned home windows, some of which slide open on brass rollers. The corners of the verandah window frame are supported by pretty substantial arched brackets. The double entrance has been narrowed from its primary width, which is indicated by the characteristic Craftsman Fashion entrance measures.
The unusually broad rough-sawn clapboard siding (8 inch exposure) is protected by a organic dim brown stain, and the trim is painted white. This is the earliest known example in Burlington of this procedure, which is also seen in the illustration of the household of Mr Charles Loosley, at Pine Cove, in Flatt’s Lake Shore Surveys booklet in 1912 and in the cottages of the Cedar Springs Community, developed by Flatt in the mid-1920s. The white paint improves the effect of the strong triangle brackets supporting the overhanging eaves of the entrance gable, and emphasizes the very well-proportioned trim of the home windows. The double-hung windows have six over one panes in the common Craftsman design. They are grouped in pairs on the west-side bedrooms and manifest singly on the east and north elevations. All the primary home windows besides for the verandah windows and the rest room window have stable shutters with large metallic hinge brackets and crescent moon cutouts.
The Craftsman Design inside is exceptionally very well maintained and authentic. The double entrance doors open onto interior double doors top from the verandah to the sitting place, exactly where a significant brick fire with a bracketed wooden mantelpiece aligns with the doors. A bookcase with drawers beneath is created in alongside the fireplace. The eating room is made up of a built-in cupboard with leaded glass doorways not dissimilar to the stained-glass function that was to be showcased in Flatt’s own property, Lakehurst Villa, crafted a number of a long time later. A narrow staircase sales opportunities up from the dining area to what was initially an attic more than the verandah. All of this interior woodwork, together with the window trim and plate rails in the dining place and sitting area and the floors, is wholly unspoiled and has its primary dark walnut-stained end. The plaster walls and coved ceilings are in excellent issue. The pantry consists of first cabinets.
The dwelling is secluded from the Lakeshore Street by its substantial back garden, which includes lots of old trees, shrubs, and perennials. This seclusion from the street is a powerful reminder of the earliest landscaping techniques alongside this stretch of the Lakeshore. The vegetable and perennial beds are in the primary destinations, exactly where they are placed for the most effective sights from the home windows of the residence. Some roses stay from the backyard garden of Mr Latham, who grew quite a few prize-profitable blooms. The increase of the lake level in new yrs has brought on the decline of the beach front and the initial dock.
This is an fantastic example of the Burlington summertime property in the Edwardian period. Its initial owner was a Mr White, of Hamilton. It was purchased circa 1910 by Richard L. Latham, Chief Engineer for the T H & B Railway in Hamilton, and has remained in the household for some 80 a long time.
