Artists of all kinds have been invited to use for the possibility to visit our Goddard Place Flight Centre to be motivated by the large, golden, absolutely-assembled James Webb House Telescope mirror. Webb has a mirror that is approximately 22 ft substantial and (to improve it for infrared observations) is protected in a microscopic layer of actual gold. Since of Webb’s visually striking look, the venture hosted a special viewing event on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016.

There was an overpowering reaction to the function invitation and in the long run twenty-4 persons were being chosen to go to. They represented a broad variety of inventive media and designs, including: watercolor, 3D printed sculpture, silk screening, acrylics, sumi-e (East Asian brush procedure), comics, letterpress, woodwork, metalwork, jewellery building, fiber artwork, ink, mural painting, kite-earning, tattooing, scientific illustration, poetry, songwriting, and online video creating.

While some of the items of art were concluded at the celebration, most of the artists went residence with their heads complete of ideas and sketchbooks complete of notes.

This is Joanna Barnum’s finished watercolor. She suggests, “Throughout the Artist Party at NASA Goddard Room Flight Center on November 2, 2016, I was equipped to finish this 22” x 15” watercolor painting of the James Webb Place Telescope from immediate observation above the class of about two several hours. A person element of my creative follow is “plein air” painting, which suggests painting the landscape from immediate observation. It can be a obstacle, simply because it implies producing a portray within just a restricted interval of time ahead of mild and atmospheric circumstances adjust, as nicely as coping with all sorts of climate and distractions. On the other hand, it imbues the finished operate with a perception of immediacy and vitality that for me, can be shed when performing from pics in the studio. It also forces me to distill my matter to its most crucial essence. Portray the James Webb from direct observation was a great deal like my plein air portray encounters, for the reason that of the time boundaries and hectic environment of the viewing region. I experience that the finished painting captures the aesthetic essence of the telescope and the temper of awe I felt inside of myself and the other artists all around me through this experience. I consider that artwork can and should really engage in a position in participating and informing the community about the significance of this venture.

I have picked out to release my painting underneath a Creative Commons license. It is free to distribute and publish with credit history specified to Joanna Barnum. A significant resolution model is readily available by calling joanna@joannabarnum.com.”
