Window on the south side of the choir by Morris & Co, 1914, posthumously reusing an previously design by Edward Burne Jones.
Jesus School may possibly not be the oldest of Cambridge’s colleges, but irrespective it can nonetheless boast the oldest chapel. The existing cruciform building was previously the monastic church of St Mary & St Radegund, a convent of nuns founded in 1157. This was dissolved in 1496 when the present college was established on the same website by Bishop John Alcock with the previous convent church adapted to use as the present school chapel, which involved different modifications to its framework which include the demolition of a variety of areas which include the greater aspect of the nave. The current chapel is hence a minimized edition of the primary church, but it is continue to distinctly various in type from other college or university chapels, earning its former monastic use all the extra apparent.
A person approaches the chapel from the north west by using a cloister (a great deal altered from its initial condition) and it is straight away crystal clear that much of the nave has been replaced by university buildings, lowering it to identical proportions to the transepts. The central tower is square and fairly squat, a late medieval rebuild immediately after the foundation of the higher education.
Inside the truncated nave there would be a feeling of starkness from the plain white partitions had been it not for the splashes of colour from the home windows and the richly decorated ceiling, all stunning illustrations of Pre-Raphaelite art by William Morris and his circle, the chapel windows getting mainly crammed with a sequence of figures from cartoons by Burne Jones. The effect is loaded and enjoyable and has breathed new daily life into this historical developing. The choir beyond is partially concealed by loaded woodwork, the chancel monitor and the elaborately carved stalls which keep some notable examples of late medieval carving. The choir by itself is a handsome case in point of Early English architecture with slender lancet windows, these remaining filled with Hardman glass, the only windows not adorned with Morris & Co layouts.
Jesus School Chapel is one of my complete favourites, a pleasant developing with some stunning glass. Happily it appears to be 1 of the extra visitor pleasant faculties in Cambridge having generally discovered it doable to wander about freely whilst someway keeping away from the crowds of visitors that sure other Cambridge schools bring in.
