The school’s mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. In 2007, under the direction of Master Boatbuilder Jeff Hammond, the school’s Traditional Large Craft class built a Haven 12 1/2 for a client. The Haven 12 1/2 is a popular adaptation of Nathanael G. Herreshoff’s 1914 daysailor, designed by Joel White.
White’s work was praised in his obituary published in The New York Times in 1997. Herreshoff, on the other hand, is often referred to as “the Wizard of Bristol” due to his contributions to the design of yachts and sailboats. The Haven 12 1/2 was built using different methods of striking waterlines. The “string method” was used to strike the top of the boot-topping while the batten method was used to strike the bottom of the boot-topping.
