Tunbridge Wells, Kent: Remembering King Charles as a Martyr

King Charles the Martyr, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

The equinox has just happened, signifying the end of the year and the beginning of the countdown before Christmas. It can be a time of reflection, mixed emotions, and looking back at the past year. The author, who is on vacation, drops off his partner at work and spends the day driving around Kent on a mini-churchcrawl, taking photographs of different churches, and enjoying the scenery. He visits the Sidney Chapel at Penshurst Place, where the Sidney family has been buried since Tudor times, and takes photographs of the memorials and tombs, as well as the colorful roof beams and heraldic shields. He is disappointed by the overly gaudy 15th-century font, which has been painted too brightly. The author then drives to Speldhurst, where there is no parking available near the church. He decides to skip the church and move on to Groombridge, but once there, discovers that the church is in Sussex, not Kent. He misses the last church in the village and decides to move on to Tunbridge Wells, where he photographs the ceiling and other details of the church. He has an encounter with a warden who asks him why he is taking photographs, but he brushes it off and continues doing what he loves. Before leaving, he keeps his promise to a young man selling the Big Issue that he would come back and buy a copy. He instead gives the young man a fiver as a gesture of kindness. The author then goes to pick up his partner in Folkestone after her meal, scrolling through Twitter and stopping at a service station for coffee and food before arriving.
