The equinox marks the end of the year, the shortest “day” of the year, and the start of light winning over darkness. The day is a time for reflection, celebration, and mixed emotions. The author was on vacation while his friend Jools had to work until lunchtime, after which all employees were treated to a fancy lunch, drinks, and a bottle of wine. The author drove Jools to work and spent the day on a mini-churchcrawl, visiting several churches in the far west of Kent. The first stop was Penshurst Church, where Gilbert Scott was heavily involved and the Sidney family’s memorials were worth revisiting. The author then drove to Speldhurst and Groombridge, both of which turned out to be closed, before finally reaching a church in Tunbridge Wells, where the author attended a service and photographed the details of the church. The author then kept his promise to a young man selling the Big Issue by giving him a fiver before returning to Folkestone to pick up Jools.
