From Cumberland, we took I-68 eastward. We exited on to US-40 Scenic (also termed Fifteen Mile Creek Highway) and aspect of the Nationwide Street. We followed that route for about four miles right before achieving the crest of Town Hill. The scenic forget about atop Town Hill has an amazing perspective of 3 states and 7 counties. Early cars were no match for the steep grades and restricted turns alongside this area of the Countrywide Road. At the flip of the 20th century, it was “practically an uninhabited segment, wild and beautiful past anticipation, and with a most apparent, bracing atmosphere . . . it appears pretty secure to estimate that there may be additional bridges than people.” Surrounded in the 1920s by apple orchards, travellers started to connect with this space the “Attractiveness Location of Maryland.”
Historic Town Hill Lodge (see comment under), now a mattress & breakfast, is positioned on the north facet of the highway. Initially crafted in early 1916 as a fruit stand, it experienced grow to be a bustling restaurant and lodge by 1920. Town Hill was “the initial vacationer hotel constructed in the state of Maryland to accommodate the automobile traveler.” Even soon after in depth reworking, the Inn continue to retains the seem of yesteryear with its 10 foot ceilings, unique woodwork, and furnishings.
