The equinox has happened, and light will now triumph over darkness. This marks the end of the year and is a time of reflection and celebration. The narrator is on vacation while his friend Jools has to work, but her employers are treating her and her coworkers to lunch and drinks at a fancy place in Folkestone. The narrator drops Jools off and heads out on a church crawl through the far west of Kent. He visits Penshurst Church, where Gilbert Scott was very busy and the Sidney family’s memorials and tombs catch his eye. He leaves a fiver for the church and heads off to Speldhurst, but the church doors are closed so he moves onto Groombridge where there is a small chapel with fabulous glass. Heavy rain falls as he drives on to Tunbridge Wells where he visits the church and takes photographs. He is quizzed by a church warden who asks why he is taking photos, to which he says he enjoys it. After getting his shots, he leaves and stops to buy the Big Issue, giving the young salesman a fiver. He then heads back to Folkestone to pick up Jools after her meal.
