A short while ago, a friend who taught a lot of of the images workshops I’ve attended asked me to help him out with a woodworking difficulty: he has an antique workbench that he needs to set again into use, but he is missing the knobs that went on the primary tommy bars (handles) for the two wooden vises on the bench. He questioned if I could reproduce them. I agreed, as I’d been thinking about constructing some matters with wooden screws (e.g., nipping push for bookbinding) anyway, and wanted to get some of the tooling and capabilities necessary for that. So I took on the task. We agreed that I’d make entire new handles, as matching the possibly special screw threads on the primary types may be hard. The challenge has turned out to be an appealing journey…

The primary handles to be changed are maple fairly than using up my maple stock to convert down into dowels, I managed to come across some 1″ tricky maple dowel inventory to give me a head get started. I simply turned 3/4″ tenons on the finish and slice screw threads on them. Now it is time to experiment with knob shapes…

Not long ago, a good friend who taught lots of of the images workshops I have attended requested me to assist him out with a woodworking dilemma: he has an antique workbench that he wants to place back again into use, but he’s missing the knobs that went on the initial tommy bars (handles) for the two wooden vises on the bench. He asked if I could reproduce them. I agreed, as I might been imagining about setting up some points with picket screws (e.g., nipping press for bookbinding) in any case, and wanted to get some of the tooling and capabilities necessary for that. So I took on the challenge. We agreed that I’d develop full new handles, as matching the most likely unique screw threads on the authentic types may well be hard. The venture has turned out to be an fascinating journey…

Ok, this point is super unsightly (‘rough hewn” my daughter mentioned) but I was not seeking for concluded surfaces at all just wanted to go via all the ways to make a tenon, a knob, and to thread both equally to match with each other. That owning been achieved, it truly is time to commence on the real detail.

This is a scrap of pine I elected to consider out my spoke pointer and hollow auger on initial. I figured if I could slash threads in pine, I might be fairly effectively set for hardwoods. If you consider about it, you will notice that chopping threads at the conclusion of a dowel is a extra or a lot less cross-grain slash, and pine tends to crumble instead than shear if the cutter is not extremely sharp. This took some executing, initially on the spoke pointer, then on the hollow auger, then on the cutter that arrived installed in the screwbox This latter bit is fundamentally a smaller v-gouge, but came not actually sharpened, or sharpened hamhandedly. Would not have worked ideal at all. Luckily was warned about this and I used an hour honing it right up until it was razor sharp and experienced the right condition at the vertex of the cutter’s V. Then it worked fantastic.
