Bargeboard (likely from Medieval Latin bargus, or barcus, a scaffold, and not from the now obsolete synonym vergeboard), the boards fastened to the projecting gables of a roof to give them strength and to mask, hide and protect the usually exposed close of the horizontal timbers or purlins of the roof to which they were being attached. Bargeboards are often moulded only or carved.

There are a couple different approaches to establish an Italianate residence. The main attribute is the brackets at the eave, arched doorways and home windows, bay windows and flat roofs. The residences are normally in a boxed or rectangular condition. Irrespective of scale, all Italianates have extremely broad eaves generally supported by large brackets, tall home windows, and scrollwork. Another distinctive “signature” of the design is a central solitary-bay porch or extended porches. A lot of examples aspect a cupola. A number of of the types (commonly “Tuscan”) feature a tower.
Considering that the Italianate was a dwelling style that could be transported by railroad, piece by piece, this design and style dominated American residences constructed involving 1850 and 1890.
