The Church of St Breaca, also known as St Breage, is a 15th-century church located in the small Cornish village of Breage in the UK. It was named after an Irish nun who arrived in Cornwall in the 5th century. This historic church captures attention with its stunning architecture and design. Many of its features, such as the woodwork, stonework, kneeler cushions, and stained glass windows, offer excellent opportunities for black and white photography. The church has inspired one particular project by a local photographer, who is exploring the photographic possibilities of Cornwall’s historic churches and churchyards.
The Churches Project is a personal initiative of a photographer who decided, in April 2015, to focus on black and white photography, particularly of Cornwall’s granite landscapes. After visiting Zennor Church in the same year, the photographer was captivated by the photographic potential of Cornwall’s churches and churchyards, both within and outside their confines. The exterior of many historic churches in Cornwall features rough-hewn stone walls that are ideal for black and white photography. The interiors also offer exquisite photographic opportunities, with colours in woodwork, stonework, kneeler cushions, and stained glass windows. Thus, began The Churches Project. The photographer’s portfolio and blog, Piktour, showcase the results of this effort.
