Scamp Camp #1, “Scurvy Canines Team” Reunion 2013, Port Townsend, WA

The prepared reunion of a bunch of Scamp Camp #1 boats did not really arrive as planned, Luna #162 wasn’t really all set for her initially splash! No anxieties, we went to Port Townsend for the first weekend of Camp #4, anyway, so we could partake in the launch of Zephyr #161, the fine vessel created by Keith Nasman! Even though there, we took aspect in the inaugural start of two (!!) Scamps (Zephyr and Skol, the wonderful products of Terry’s get the job done, from Scamp Camp #3), cruised the waters on an epic excursion in Zephyr, and popped into the very first working day of Camp #4 to wish the following crop of scamplings a fruitful start.

GEDC5242 - Port Hadlock WA - Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding - Contemporary Program - John Atkin-designed FLIPPER dinghy under construction

FLIPPER was created by John Atkin, primarily based on an before style for a similiar boat, called MABEL, by his father, William Atkin.

Flipper is a dinghy, or “dink”, designed to be a protected boat to use as a tender to a bigger boat or, when rigged with mast and sail, as a risk-free boat in which young children can find out to sail without pricey climbing tools and so forth.

Her designer writes: “In The Guide of Boats, I wrote that Mabel is a famous small vessel. Her programs have been released the environment about. They ended up initially demonstrated in MotorBoat magazine — affectionately identified by lots of as “the outdated inexperienced sheet” when Billy Atkin was performing a sequence of models for that publication some 60 many years in the past! Later the style was offered in the effectively-cherished journal Fore An’ Aft in an report by the late Weston Farmer. Nevertheless later on, Mabel showed up in a 1937 reserve entitled Motor Boats, which was prepared by my father. He made this small dinghy at Huntington, New York, in 1924.”

“Quite not long ago, I revised the style and design of Mabel, immediately after getting built a single of these boats in my Dinghy Shed. Based on my observations, I amplified her freeboard and renamed her Flipper: The greater freeboard produced a noticeably a lot more burdensome boat. Her principal proportions are: 10 ft 1/2 inch total by 3 toes 11 inches beam and 3 1/2 inches draft.”

The class of 2014 designed a few of these minor dinghies. Two were being created typically. Teacher Bruce Blatchley created this 1 of maritime plywood.
