In the months given that I flatttened both of those sides of the benchtop, the aspect where the pith surfaces (comes of paying for slabs sight unseen) humped once more, creating it difficult to have faith in the layout of the mortises to obtain the leg tenons. Made a decision it was time to flatten it again. First tried using to do it with hand planes, and of course that would have worked, but the hump was a bit larger sized than I considered, so decided to haul out the equipment upcoming.

How is this job like the Shining?

Nicely, you may well remember the Scatman Crothers character racing by way of the evening to the hotel to rescue Danny and Wendy, when just as he arrives…wham, he’s dead. Properly, some decades in the past, I acquired a timber framer’s corner chisel, anticipating that sometime I might require it. It sat quietly, hanging on a hook, waiting for its second to arrive.

Last but not least, yesterday, that instant arrived: I couldn’t in shape the legs less than the mortiser, so I utilized a Forstner little bit to rough out the squander in the mortise. Great time to use the corner chisel to clean up the corners!

Got it out, received about three great whacks in on the iron-hooped rosewood deal with (in which the corner chisel did a beautiful job!) and wham…the cope with buckled, shattered, and disintegrated. It was thoroughly shot. I can — and will — switch a new manage for it, but am unwilling to keep up the undertaking for it.

Will just have to hack it out with a basic ol’ 1″ Marples Blue Chip.
