    Artist Statement
The platters I have sent to this exhibition blend several ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Artwork Pots were being built to exhibit wealth and electrical power. They were created to inform a tale, to commemorate an function or a human being, and to display talent and challenge the skills of the artisans who made them. The next custom is the Fish Platter. Fish platters have been a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Motion of the 1950s and 60s. The 3rd and very last custom is the A single-Line visible and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Motion.
Humor through the use of the visible pun was a mainstay of the California Funk motion. Humor in clay has a tradition as previous as the use of the product. I have always felt that humor has been given limited change as a significant emotion. Artwork function that utilizes humor and has been actively excised from collections of serious artwork. It may be that we do not fully grasp the function of humor as effectively as we fully grasp the operate of the other thoughts.
In the work offered I have attempted to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative item. The platters are significant to give them a marginally overblown feeling of their very own worth and to be able to be seen from a distance . They are intended for the wall and the table. The substantial size to match the significance of large gatherings.
I have experimented with to change historic patterns with objects minimized to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my atmosphere or reflections of own pursuits. Photographs of switch of the century technological innovation, (the Machine Age), are a particular beloved. Matter make any difference ranges from humorous depiction of daily objects to gender stereotypes. My talents as A draftsman are limited but feel to be satisfactory for the form and top quality of image that the issue needs. They have a cartoon appear as opposed to the crisp complexity of fantastic china.
The clay human body, a pink earthenware, is heavily potted and would make no secrete of its versions and flaws. The glaze operate is in the Majolica design and is accomplished extremely substantially like a watercolor on gentle paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may possibly have an supplemental firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing environment employing an electrical kiln.
