    Bench Close

    The church dates again to C12 and was allegedly founded in response to Pagan worship on the close by White Horse Hill.

    Unusually, its interior was remaining mainly untouched by the Victorians, and as a result it boasts unusual C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), attractive medieval stained glass, and remarkable C15 to C17 woodwork, which include high-quality bench finishes, panelling, pulpit and rood monitor.

    Unfortunately, inspite of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into such a lousy state of restore that it was placed on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Register, and even faced imminent closure.

    Fortunately the nearby local community rallied close to to preserve their beautiful nearby landmark and a restoration venture will start in the summer months of 2015.

    Very uncommon wall painting of Salomé with St. John The Baptist’s head on a platter.

    Unfortunately, irrespective of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into such a weak point out of maintenance that it was put on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Sign-up, and even faced imminent closure.

    Fortuitously the nearby group rallied all over to preserve their attractive regional landmark and a restoration project will start out in the summer months of 2015.
