Jamestown New York - Burgett and Robbins Law Firm – Ahrens Mansion

George Ahrens, dealer in coal and oil, designed this massive Italian stone mansion in 1898. The composition has been explained as “..the most elaborate home architecturally…” in the city. The layout, in the grand classical style, was a trademark of American architect, Richard Morris Hunt. The architecture has been labeled Tutorial Revival or Beaux-Arts Classicism.

Extraordinary attributes of the exterior contain: the tall, paired Ionic columns on the portico which were carved in on piece and transported to this locale fine stained glass in the 2nd tale windows at east and west ends and the ornamentally framed letter “A” above the entrance door.

The interior decorations of the first ground rooms are consultant of a range of European variations. The major hall’s oak fireplace and cornucopia are of Italian style. The drawing home to the right of the entry has an 18th century French taste. Both the eating room and the library with beamed ceilings and oak woodwork speak of English manor residences. A match place with stenciled ceiling beams, and a kitchen area and pantry are also on the initially floor.

One of the most placing capabilities of the interior is the substantial Palladian staircase. It is flanked at the base by Corinthian pillars on marble bases and the divided landing is illuminated by a large coloured glass window.

The house handed from the Ahrens family in the early 1930s. The value of its routine maintenance for the duration of the Melancholy made it unacceptable to many city establishments to which it was bequeathed. It became town house in lieu of back again taxes and was a centre for federal WPA initiatives.

In 1941 it was obtained by Howard D. and Albert A. Wellman. They restored significantly of the first decor and Mrs. Alice Levan operated a tearoom on the 1st ground. The higher rooms were residences and reception and dressing rooms for unique occasions.

In the postwar yrs the mansion served as the dwelling of the American Legion and extra lately it has been occupied by experienced offices.

12 Days of Clyde, Day 5 back - Dec 2018

Designed these minor watercolor doodles on circles of paper for Teresa. Our Canine experienced to be put down this slide, so I did a small memory point for him. Each working day highlights his loving-ness and goofiness. These are intended to be ornaments but time ran out. In the store I will put them in wooden circles (cherry reclaimed from cabinet sets) with tiny round doors with a window, that opens on a tiny hinge. I appreciate artwork and woodworking with equivalent enthusiasm so this kind of stuff is actually enjoyable to plan. Selfmade gifts sense so genuine to the spirit of the time that is in all places and but elusive at the similar time…sort of like Charlie Brown’s problem. I normally say I will start off these tasks in ..say August but never ever do until eventually the force is on.
    Merry Xmas.
