The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school located in Port Hadlock, Washington. The school aims to preserve and teach the skills and crafts of fine wooden boatbuilding and other traditional maritime crafts. Students at the school build boats according to the documentation and lines of an original boat owned by The Center For Wooden Boats in Seattle, WA. The specific boats that students build are Grandy skiffs, typically between 9 and 14.5 feet long. These small crafts are lapstrake planked in western red cedar with sapele stems, keels, and transoms. Frames for the boats are made of either White Oak or Black Locust. The school builds one to two of these boats each year, and they are some of their most popular boats.

The Grandy Boat Company was formerly located on Lake Union in Seattle and had been building boats both large and small since the early 1920s until 1967. The school follows the US Coast Guard standards when building both commissioned and speculative boats while teaching students the traditional wooden and wood composite boatbuilding skills required to work in the marine trades. Income generated from the sale of boats supports the school. Anyone interested in discussing building a boat can reach out to the school through email or phone call.

Haven 12 1/2 - laying out floorboards - Adam Wisnieski

The Haven 12 1/2 is a classic daysailer designed by Joel White, based on the work of legendary naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff. Master boatbuilder Jeff Hammond and his 2007 Traditional Large Craft class at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding built a Haven 12 1/2 for a client. The school is a private, accredited non-profit vocational institution located in Port Hadlock, Washington. Its mission is to teach the art of wooden boatbuilding and preserve traditional maritime crafts.

Joel White is a popular designer, who adapted Herreshoff’s 1914 daysailer while staying true to its classic lines. White’s obituary provides a good summary of his work, which included a number of classic yachts. Nathanael Herreshoff is commonly known as “the Wizard of Bristol,” and for good reason. He designed the most successful racing yachts of his era, including several America’s Cup winners. The Herreshoff Marine Museum offers a detailed look at his life, work, and legacy.

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding offers programs that range from six months to two years, as well as occasional short courses. Most programs teach students the art of wooden boatbuilding, with a focus on traditional designs and methods. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience, with students spending most of their time in the shop working on real boats. The school also offers instruction in related skills, like traditional rigging, marine finishes, and woodworking. Students learn the importance of working in cooperation by completing projects as a team.

The Haven 12 1/2 built by Hammond’s class is a beautiful example of traditional wooden boatbuilding. The boat measures 12’6″ long and 5’10” wide, with a 3’3″ draft. Its sail area is 100 square feet, with a spruce mast and boom, and Dacron sails. The Haven 12 1/2 reflects White’s skill at adapting classic designs while maintaining their elegance and simplicity. The class was able to complete the boat to the client’s satisfaction, thanks to the school’s excellent training and resources.

In conclusion, the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding offers a valuable training ground for those who want to learn traditional maritime crafts. Students can study the art of wooden boatbuilding, rigging, and other essential skills under the guidance of experienced instructors. The school provides a supportive environment that emphasizes teamwork and encourages creativity.
