The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, located in Port Hadlock, WA, is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school whose mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. The school is comprised of several programs, including the Traditional Large Craft class and the Traditional Small Craft class. These classes work on building and finishing wooden boats, often under the direction of master boatbuilders.
In 2007, the Traditional Large Craft class built the hull for a Haven 12 1/2 for a client under the direction of Master Boatbuilder Jeff Hammond. The Traditional Small Craft class then finished the boat by longboarding the hull and ensuring it was fair and smooth.
The Haven 12 1/2 is an adaptation of Nathanael Herreshoff’s 1914 daysailor, redesigned by popular designer Joel White. White’s work can be read about in his obituary, which gives a good summary. Nathanael Herreshoff is often called “the Wizard of Bristol” for his boat designs, and his work can be read about on the Herreshoff Marine Museum’s website.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding continues to teach and preserve the art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. Interested individuals can find more information on the school’s website or by contacting them via email or phone.
