The Kingston Boat is a superlative illustration of a mid-20th century boat used for recreational fishing on the Puget Audio. It was initially built in Kingston WA, on the Kitsap Peninsula, northwest of Seattle.

Boats like these had been constructed by the hundreds from about 1915 or so by the mid-1960’s. Illustrations include the famed Poulsbo boat, the Mukilteo Boat, and the Sande boat (developed by the Sande boat Organization in Belfair WA). Most of these boats were being the merchandise of just one or two man retailers, and were created to fish.

The Kingston Boat is about 16 feet extensive and is driven by a modest British-created gasoline engine that ought to be hand-cranked to start off it. She is planked in western purple cedar about white oak frames. She is a deep boat, designed to carry a reasonable sum of weight in her capacious hull.

The proprietor of the first boat approached the University and requested that we create him a replacement boat to his initial boat’s traces. Main Instructor Tim Lee’s Common Substantial Craft college students produced a strains jig and diligently calculated the boat in the spring of 2011, then lofted and it and started developing it in April. The Joel White-developed Nutshell Pram is a common plywood composite pram. They are an excellent challenge for our students as they can easily be designed in the course of the six thirty day period Modern day Boatbuilding course taught every year from January by mid-June. We normally develop two at a time to give college students more opportunities to study the essentials on these extremely able little craft.

Prams have transoms on each stop – the bow is typically a little bit lesser than the stern transom. They are workhorses, made to have a good deal of pounds back and forth to a boat from the pier. They’re created to be quick to tow driving a sailboat, or to elevate up and retail store on deck for longer passages. The Nutshell Pram succeeds admirably on all of these accounts.

The Nutshell Pram can be built as a rowing-only boat or outfitted with a centerboard and spars so it can be sailed.

We developed this boat for the Pacific Northwest Resource Collectors (PNTC) .
