Absolutely sure, it seems to be tranquil now, but this was a spring-loaded nightmare of a task to glue-up appropriately. I clamped the board to the drill press table (identical depth) with spacer blocks to elevate the clamp pads up bigger than the area so I would have area to snake in the glue-coated edge band in between the board edge and strap clamp. This was to pull out the slight warp in the board, receiving it flat with the drill press table’s surface area.

Then I place 1/8″ aluminum blocks close to the perimeter on the drill push table, taping them down at their corners. This locked in the disc, but also provided a pad on which the edge banding would sit to increase it up 1/8″, so it would adhere up even much more about the edge, as a lip to retain merchandise on the lazy susan. I figured I might then somehow sand/airplane/whichever away the more disc below the edge-banding, but later, it seemed like it would really glance wonderful to have that recess beneath. I’m not certain however.

At any price, I had to tighten this thing down extra than I felt relaxed performing, and it was genuinely difficult to get it all accomplished with only 2 hands, but in the conclusion, I prevailed. Then I went at the rapidly-drying glue with a scraper and hot, damp rag to wipe up the extra glue.

I are unable to hold out to unclamp it tomorrow and see what I have! Then it is really on to ending. Heaps of ending…

A single last shot with the grain turned. Take note that the darker spots in the earlier shot are absent. That is a very little little bit of a peek into the shimmery excellent of this maple now. I am very amazed, and I read tonight that noted wooden finisher Jeff Jewitt – who seems all around the online in conversations of wood finishes – mentioned in an job interview I read substantially of that he really likes shellac most effective of all the brush-on finishes (while it can also be sprayed – he experienced other possibilities for very best spray finishes).

Spraying a thinned-down (1-2lbs reduce) of this dewaxed shellac would surely have been less difficult. Sanding right after each coat, and a couple of levels of spray-on spar urethane as a prime-coat will even out the floor, I assume.

I bought this minor RIDGID laminate trimmer from House Depot a short while ago for $99. I’m loving it. It is just like a router, but genuinely quick to command with one particular hand. Currently I wasted an hour producing an extremely-complicated Plexiglas® circle cutter. After a handful of passes, reducing the 1/8″ bit each time, I recognized that this board was not the same as the board I lower 2 nights in the past with this trimmer, and my clamp guides from Rockler. It’s significantly thicker. Hadn’t transpired to me to see. The 1/8″ little bit was about 1/8″ way too small to lower thoroughly clean by, so I had to move to the band noticed. Need to have just employed that in the initially location, but I was energized about producing a circle guideline for some cause.

I a short while ago stopped by Anderson Plywood – very first time in several years, and 1st considering the fact that I’ve been in a house, as a substitute of an condominium, this means I have a shop now, and can really invest in lumber and use it. I failed to see substantially in the way of lumber final time, but final year I noticed on the web they detailed about 15 species of strong lumber. The place?

I went again the other working day and experienced to inquire them. You have to go out the back and all around into a aspect setting up. It was a small slice of heaven in there. They experienced woods I’ve found: poplar, red oak, African mahogany (I have a small sample or two from a Rockler hardwood assortment box, and just one from a Woodworkers Resource sample pack), beech (though I am not confident this was European beech, which was at Property Depot as soon as, and hardly ever once more). They had woods I have not uncovered in other places, like alder, and chestnut. They experienced woods I have observed in significantly smaller portions, like zebrawood, wenge, and walnut. 1 large variation was that these were all in 4/4 and 8/4 measurements (1″ and 2″ unfinished – total measure), and marketed in board feet, as a substitute of lineal feet, as at House Depot.

This was a truly tough board, but pretty quite, with only 1 tiny streak of lighter sapwood, which I merely slice away in a 3/4″x3/4″ rod, which I might use for tiny turnings. I jointed the 5′ piece of the reduce-down 9′ plank, and got the board flawlessly straight, regardless of it currently being so very long. My Delta jointer is greatest at factors below 3′ very long. I ripped the other facet straight and parallel, and then minimize off this 3/16″ strip. I experience semi-professional getting in a position to thoroughly clean up lumber this way now.

At any amount, I did not at all like how this looked. It clashes, IMO. I will use the strip for a little something else. I am heading with maple.

Skipping a handful of ways right here, I jointed and planed (on the jointer) 5 1x4s of maple, all slice from the exact same 8′ plank to 17″ every. Even with jointing and ripping to make the sides fantastic and parallel, they continue to added up to just a hair above 17″ all biscuit joined up. This is the base, whereupon I drew a 16″ circle with a big compass. I drew the circle when the boards were continue to loose so I could lay out in which to place the biscuits without later ending up slicing by way of the biscuits when slicing out the circle.
