  • Lauren Emeritz’s Letterpress Artistry

    Letterpress - Lauren Emeritz

NASA recently invited artists of all kinds to visit its Goddard Space Flight Center and be inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope mirror, which is fully assembled and covered in microscopic layers of actual gold. The event showcased a special viewing of the giant telescope and attracted an overwhelming number of applications. Out of the numerous applicants, twenty-four artists were selected to attend and represented a broad range of artistic media and styles, including watercolor, 3D printed sculpture, silk screening, acrylics, sumi-e (East Asian brush technique), comics, letterpress, woodwork, metalwork, jewelry making, fiber art, ink, mural painting, kite-making, tattooing, scientific illustration, poetry, songwriting, and video making.

During their visit, artists spent time sitting right in front of the telescope, taking photos and filming a music video, and sketching and painting. Some of the pieces of art were produced at the event while most of the artists returned home filled with new ideas and full sketchbooks.

One such artist that created a work for the event is Lauren Emeritz, who produced a letterpress work titled See the Galaxy and Beyond. The letters in her work were hand drawn and laser cut out of wood and then printed using a letterpress. The piece explores new techniques and processes, while the hexagons in the background represent the unfinished telescope.

NASA continues to add event photos and art here to their Flickr page. To stay up to date with NASA’s projects and events, follow them on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google Plus, and Instagram.

In a moment of transcendence between science and art, the US Goddard Space Flight Center invited 24 artists of diverse media to visit and to be inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope. The telescope’s mirror is nearly 22 feet high and is covered in a microscopic layer of gold to optimize it for infrared observations. Artists selected represented a broad range of styles, including poetry, songwriting, sculpture, silk screening and tattooing. Some produced finished pieces while others left with sketchbooks full of notes.

  • Artist Event for the James Webb Space Telescope

James Webb Space Telescope Artist Event

NASA’s invitation to artists to visit its Goddard Space Flight Center to see the James Webb Space Telescope mirror gathered an enthusiastic response. This event saw 24 artists, working in a variety of media, spend several hours in front of the telescope, sketching, painting and taking photos. Webb’s mirror is nearly 22 feet high and coated with a layer of microscopic gold designed to help optimise observations in the infrared spectrum.

The artists who attended this unique event were selected from a pool of applicants and offered a range of media, including silk screening, wood and metalwork, tattooing, singing, scientific illustration and even kite-making. The cross-section of artist attendees allowed for an intriguing range of work, with pieces including sketches, photographs and a music video.

The project hosted a special viewing event in November 2016 due to the striking appearance of the telescope, and this event saw the artists seated directly in front of the telescope, creating their works right in front of the mirror. The event has generated much interest, and while some pieces of work are completed, many artists left with notebooks full of ideas and further thoughts to work on.
