Port Hadlock WA - Boat School - Launching the Forest Service Boat - trucking the boat to the port

We couldn’t have questioned for a extra perfect working day to move the boat from the store to the Port Townsend Boat Haven to prepare for the start of this three year project.

This small tug was developed by the American designer H.C. Hanson in 1957 for the US Forest Service as a Scaler’s Boat. Scalers ascertain the amount of board feet of lumber in just about every log cut by a timber crew. A few of these vessels ended up constructed commercially in the mid-1950’s to this layout for the Forest Company for use in the western United States.

Beneath the route of Chief Instructor Tim Lee, college students at the Faculty commenced development in 2010 and concluded in 2012. The Traditional Significant Craft lessons of 2010, 2011 and 2012 all contributed to the design of this boat.

The tug is 26 toes extended with a beam of about 7 ft. It has a draft of 4 toes, and displaces about 4 tons.

Our tug is crafted as a cruising tug. It is planked in aromatic port orford cedar from southern Oregon, more than white oak frames. The property sides are mahogany. The boat is driven by a 39 hp Yanmar diesel motor, and was customized to the owner’s desire’s before delivery.

The tug was sold to an owner in Michigan, and shipped to him in late August, 2012 for use on the fresh waters of Traverse Bay MI

a nice breeze, a bit of sun, and a downwind run! (Luna Log entry)

a nice breeze, a bit of sun, and a downwind run! (Luna Log entry)

Luna’s 8th outing, this 1 with Chris on English Bay. This is the log entry:

    ———(Luna Log, entry 8)———-
    Sun, June 22, 2014
    – Vanier Park launch, English Bay
    – Chris and I
    – started out loading 10:00 or so, even though Chris prepped ribs for evening meal and packed a lunch for us
    – left residence about 11:30
    – introduced 12:30, tide about 2m, on the flood (Pt Atkinson)
    – 8-10 knt Westerly in the bay at launch, but lighter in the creek mouth

Extremely occupied at the ramp, a Compact 16 failed to have more than enough h2o to start, said he’d try it yet again in an hour. Chris took the bow painter over to the float, I backed Luna in, strike the brakes, and she slid ideal off. Chris pulled her above to the float, didn’t even get her ft damp!

Latest functioning really solid into Bogus Creek (appeared like 3 or 4 knots?), we shorter-tacked up-wind and up-latest by means of a ton of traffic, timing our tacks to weave through all the boats coming and going. We did not make a great deal development on the initially tack, swept sideways by present-day, but the tack back again was ahead of setting up stage, an additional tack across and we experienced clawed 50 yards up the channel, back again all over again and we experienced designed some much more development, a single much more tack throughout gave us a fantastic angle to tack once extra and very clear the stage. Far more present-day on the around facet, it looks. Couldn’t have carried out it with substantially considerably less wind.

Wind picked up as we obtained apparent, superior sets of whitecaps now, I might guess 12 to 14 knots with gusts a bit more? Wanted to get a reef in, but also wished a bit extra sea room, so hung on for a while, tacked back again toward English Bay Seashore, then back again all over again as a result of all the anchored boats off Kits Stage. 1 much more tack purchased us plenty of home to drop the sail and tie in a reef. I am even now applying a snap-shackle at the clew, it truly is a bit of a wrestle to get it undone and connected to the next cringle up, but with the sail down it wasn’t terrifying or nearly anything, just not very quickly. Should’ve tied the aft nettles at similar time, they’re much too really hard to get in the moment underway again. Lazy jack was on incorrect aspect of lawn on hoist, want to sort out a far better approach, find out how to do this, or adjust up my short term lazy jack procedure! Grrr…

Settled in for a awesome beat out to Royal Van Yacht Club, quite a few other sailboats out, crossing tacks, comparing angles, and so forth. We couldn’t position as high as a J35 that blasted move us with a massive jenny up and about 10 people on the rail, but we were not a lot lower than them, perhaps 2 degrees? (But we guaranteed were being a great deal slower! They mentioned “like your boat!” as they handed about 15′ to leeward and swiftly clawed over us, as we sat in their filth.)

There was a lot of chop from all that Sunday boat targeted traffic (pretty many power cruisers throwing up wakes like mountains), which, merged with the lengthy fetch off Georgia Straight, crafted into horrible perplexed seas as the afternoon progressed. But Luna took it all in her stride, and felt quite comfortable with one reef in. Genuinely excellent management, went to weather neatly, we could easily match the angle of a San Juan 24 that we crossed quite a few times, we did not have any place in close proximity to her pace but I was extremely happy to see that we could position just as properly.

And, she “parks” so nicely! Just ease the sheet and enable go of the tiller, she quickly and calmly relaxes like an upright tiny duck, bobbing in the waves, comfy and protected. We bought our lunch out and viewed all the Hobie Cats and Tornados blasting close to, even though we slowly but surely drifted via the freighters. Chris acquired a little bit freaked by a several huge baffled waves, so I sheeted in a little bit, bought some way on and bore off on a wild wide achieve as a result of the “major seas” (it’s possible six toes superior at moments?), although we concluded our cheese and crackers. Chris could not imagine how my can of IPA sat in the forward corner of the bench, up versus the bulkhead and combing, by no means moving by way of all the ridiculous rollers and swell.

Several long reaches, gybing along the shorelines, hunting at all the mansions and men and women, chatting about life, the time went by also quickly. Functioning back again into the Creek entrance, joining the parade of returning vessels, fielding admiring remarks and exclamations of “no motor?”, and we were back again at the ramp at about 6:00 pm. That Compact 16 was again and we in comparison notes as we the two hauled out, they acquired it in ‘Frisco for affordable, it truly is their 1st season too, their cabin is “fairly cramped”, and they assumed the Scamp was very neat.

Property about 7, I washed down Luna although Chris made salad and set the ribs on. What a great working day! We uncovered a ton, and we both equally created self-assurance in the boat, ourselves, and each individual other.

Here is to lots of extra!

chart of English Bay (Luna Log entry)

I posted the following description on the SCAMP discussion board:

    ———-(Luna Log, entry 7)———–
    Tues, June 17, 2014
start at Vanier Park (entrance of Wrong Creek), English Bay
    solo
    begun loading 10:30 or so
    still left residence about 11:20
launched 12:15, tide 2.6m (Pt Atkinson desk), on the ebb, suitable on the minimum to start at this ramp with this trailer setup, automobile tailpipe just touching the h2o, back again wheels about four inches deep, gave Luna a push and she slid ideal off the bunks.

Sunlight arrived out as I released, wind extremely mild from east at initially, but strengthened to perhaps 4-5 knts, and then shifted to west 6-8 knts close to 2pm. In the easterly, I arrived at again and forth in the japanese conclude of the bay, from English Bay Beach to Kitsilano Seaside, not going significantly out into the bay in situation the wind died.

When the wind turned west I was reasonably near to the QR Channel Marker, and I defeat out to Jericho Sailing Centre (JSCA) on just one long tack. Played with outhaul, centreboard, downhaul, sheet, and heading, to obtain best upwind efficiency. Likes to be footed off, you can actually come to feel the decline of speed when you consider to position as higher as the sloops that are close by. Tacked and bore off to a wide get to across the bay, via the freighters, heading for Siwash Rock. A bit a lot more than midway across, I gybed, and headed back to Royal Van YC, gybed once more headed for Next Seashore, gybed and many others, and so forth, etcetera, all the way again.

Saw a really nice canoe yawl “Pilgram’s Wake” (a George Holmes “Eel”) and had a great chat with the fellows on board as we coordinated a few gybes and hardened up and in contrast our pointing and speed. She displaces about 3000 lbs, and Luna overtook her downwind really handily in the circumstances (4-5 knots) with the centreboard up (do not explain to him -) ), but, although the Scamp seemed to issue marginally greater, the Eel’s waterline gain confirmed when we went to weather conditions. She rolled us, mentioned goodbye, and tacked absent.

Arrived again at ramp 6pm, tide 2m, on the flood. By the time I obtained the sail down and almost everything tidied away, the drinking water was significant sufficient for a fairly basic recovery, very perfectly the reverse of the start. A fairly leisurely de-rigging, folding of sail, and many others, and I remaining the start ramp at 7:15.

Arrived home 8-ish, washed car or truck and trailer down, scrubbed the slime off the topsides and waterline (and fenders! pretty thick stuff from the flooding tide at the ramp, I assume), unloaded and opened all the hatches, and parked her in the garage 9 pm.
