At the corner of the Painters and Plaatsnijdersstraat, dealing with the Museum of Fine Arts, is one particular of the finest known and most hanging Artwork Nouveau buildings in Antwerp. The ensemble of 4 houses was built in 1901 by architect F. Smet-Verhas for “the producer navires” P. Roeis, residing in the Rue de Brésil 9 in Antwerp. The attraction of this rich shipbuilder is propagated in the facade of the corner building, wherever a balcony was incorporated in the sort of a ship. The residence is known as colloquially “the boat”.
The house has a dealing with stone in yellow brick on stone plinth, enlivened with bands and ornamental brickwork in contrasting shades, which is a common product used for Artwork Nouveau. Rich use of natural stone for cordon frames, balconies and frames of wall openings. Also imaginatively wrought iron is abundant in this ensemble: on the corner is a spectacular elaborate lantern, finely worked balcony railing in the porch, ornate railings of the entrance doors and basement windows. Expressive facade by the wide assortment of wall openings: in addition to the segmental and rectangular windows with I-beams, we discover the usual Artwork Nouveau basket arch windows. Placing in this ensemble is finely in depth and effectively-preserved woodwork of home windows and doors, which is characterized by fine panes of the skylights.
