  • Miro’s Exhibition “1-11” at MoMA

    1-11 Miro at MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art in New York featured an exhibition titled “Joan Miró: Birth of the World” from February 24th to June 15th, 2019. The exhibition focused on Miró’s early works from the 1920s and 1930s, particularly his interest in experimentation and collaboration with other artists.

One standout piece from the exhibition was Miró’s “Painting” from 1933, which is based on collages he made of magazine photos of woodworking tools. The piece features bright colors and shapes that resemble abstracted forms of these tools. Miró embedded these shapes within layers of background colors, creating a sense of depth and space.

Miró’s experimentation with collages and found objects was influenced by other artists of his time, particularly Surrealists like André Breton. The Surrealists were interested in tapping into one’s subconscious and revealing hidden meanings and associations through their art. Miró’s interest in found objects allowed him to incorporate everyday items into his art, breaking down traditional boundaries between art and life.

The “Birth of the World” exhibition also featured several other works that showcased Miró’s love of experimentation and collaboration. For example, “The Tilled Field” from 1923-1924 is a large, colorful canvas that features a variety of abstract forms in bold, primary colors. Miró worked on the painting with his friend and collaborator, the artist Ernest Hemingway. Miró would send Hemingway sketches of the work in progress, and Hemingway would suggest changes or additions.

Miró’s exploration of color and form was not limited to the canvas. “Painting-Poem” from 1925-1926 is a folding screen that features painted panels and cut-out shapes that can be moved to create different compositions. The screen was created in collaboration with the artist and poet Tristan Tzara, and reflects their shared interest in the links between visual art and language.

“Joan Miró: Birth of the World” was a celebration of a period in Miró’s life when he was exploring new techniques and ideas. His willingness to collaborate with other artists and push the boundaries of traditional art forms resulted in some of his most memorable works. The exhibition provided a unique insight into his creative process and the development of his unique artistic style.
