Dad, currently being the unassuming humble jokester he was, often reported that when the time arrived, all he wanted was “a pine box”. We laughed and stated, “positive, Father, we will not do everything extravagant.”

But when the time did come, the extra we believed about it, the more we realized he was correct. The classic casket — adorned with carvings and bevels and gigantic brassy hardware, darkish wood all glossed up until eventually it appeared plastic — just was not Dad.

So Deanne, in her artistic brilliance, decided to commission anything extra acceptable. She and Mother contacted a regional craftsman and labored with him to develop one thing light and easy, in the design of the contemporary Scandinavian furnishings that Dad liked and that filled our dwelling. There is no noticeable hardware. The best slides in its place of lifting on a hinge. The whole piece is Alder, down to the exquisite finger joints and handles.

The finished solution was a lot less expensive than any of the funeral house solutions and I know he’d like it.
