    The Hull & Barnsley Railway was a railway company that operated in Yorkshire, England in the late 19th and early 20th century. Although the company was disbanded in the 1920s, its legacy lives on through the restoration of two of its historic teak-bodied coaches.

    The restoration project is being undertaken in conjunction with Hull College, with students learning traditional woodworking and joinery skills in order to restore these valuable vehicles.

    The first coach, No. 58, was built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company in the 1920s. It is a 56ft bogie vehicle that was used for express traffic. The second coach, No. 1, is a four-wheel brake third that was built in 1868 and is the earliest surviving coach from the Hull & Barnsley Railway.

    Coach No. 1 was sold to the Taff Vale Railway and was eventually absorbed by the Great Western Railway. It remained in use until it was eventually retired and sold off. For many years, it was used as part of a house in Wales until it was rescued in the 1990s.

    Today, both of these coaches are in the process of being restored to their former glory. Students at Hull College are working on the project alongside experienced tradespeople, gaining valuable experience and learning important skills along the way.

    Overall, the restoration of these historic coaches is an important project that not only preserves the heritage of the Hull & Barnsley Railway but also provides valuable educational opportunities for future generations.

    In October 2016, a Worldwide Photowalk was held at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, with a special focus on Lucky Baldwin’s Victorian Coach Barn. This photowalk was part of an annual event organized by the photography community, with thousands of photographers participating in hundreds of locations around the world to capture and share images of their local areas.

    At the Los Angeles County Arboretum, the group of photographers gathered early on a Saturday morning, equipped with various cameras ranging from smartphones to professional-grade DSLRs. They were greeted by knowledgeable guides who led them through the arboretum, pointing out different types of trees, plants, and landscapes that could be captured in their photos.

    One of the highlights of the photowalk was the visit to Lucky Baldwin’s Victorian Coach Barn, which is a historic landmark and an architectural masterpiece. The barn features a stunning collection of restored 19th-century carriages, including several that were once owned by Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin, a prominent figure in California history. The carriages are displayed alongside other Victorian artifacts and vintage tools that provide a glimpse into life during that era.

    Photographers were particularly drawn to the intricate detailing and craftsmanship of each carriage, capturing images of the ornate wood carvings, polished brass fixtures, and richly upholstered interiors. They were also fascinated by the stories behind each carriage and the history that they represent.

    Aside from the Coach Barn, walking around the arboretum was also a treat for photographers as it presented a wide variety of subjects to capture, from the tranquil Japanese garden to the colorful peacocks wandering around the grounds. The Autumn season added a warm andrich hue to the leaves of the trees making it spectacular to capture.

    The photowalk was an opportunity for photographers to experiment with different techniques, such as playing with the lighting and shadows, using different focal lengths, and practicing long exposures. The guides provided valuable tips and advice, encouraging participants to use their creativity and imagination.

    After several hours of walking and shooting, the group reconvened at a café within the arboretum, where they shared their photos and experiences while enjoying refreshments. The photos shared during this time were a testament to the diversity in photography styles, lens preferences and individual creativity.

    Overall, the 2016 Worldwide Photowalk at the Los Angeles County Arboretum was a great success, giving photographers a chance to connect with other like-minded individuals while capturing stunning images and learning new techniques.
