The major is created from reclaimed white oak joists (3×8 and 3×10) joined up into a slab. the chessboard was built by the customer’s father several yrs ago. I routed out a 3/4″ deep inset and glued the chessboard in place as flush as feasible with the floor. The chessboard was mad from pine and mahogany squares glued into a 3/4″ thick piece of fir plywood. I sanded off the aged paint and varnish and re-stained the pine squares with a darkish stain. I still left the mahogany squares organic. The fir plywood is remaining pure…while it poses some troubles as it is old and not beautifully flat. It really is now just component of its character.
The base was an old Simplex machine utilised for slicing batting for household furniture. it still experienced a wood drum and cotton batting however on it. I removed the motors and trays and guards etc…, sanded it down repainted it flat black and dry-brushed it with pewter paint to provide out the foundry marks and graininess of the forged-iron.
The leading was attached with oak buttons I designed. there are no attachment points so I constructed L-shaped buttons on the underside that keep the foundation in location.
The wood was varnished with satin, h2o-primarily based polyurethane and sanded down to 600 grit paper.
