  • Tapping Wood for a Bolt: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Tap Wood for a Bolt

The content describes the process of tapping a hole in wood to attach a bolt or screw. The author gives a personal example of wanting to attach a makeshift fence to their desk saw using thumb screws. They accomplish this by threading a hole in the wooden fence and using the thumb screws to secure it to the desk saw.

The article goes on to explain the different types of taps that can be used depending on the diameter of the hole and the type of thread needed. The two main types of taps are hand taps and machine taps. Hand taps require a tap wrench and are used for smaller threads while machine taps are used with a drill press or lathe and are used for larger threads.

The author emphasizes the importance of using the correct size tap for the job and suggests using a tap drill chart to determine the correct size drill bit to use before tapping. He also cautions against applying too much pressure when tapping to avoid breaking the tap or causing damage to the wood.

Additionally, the author gives helpful tips for tapping wood such as using lubricant to make the process easier and smoother, back-tapping to clear the chips from the hole, and using a tap handle or tap wrench for better control.

Finally, the article concludes by pointing out that tapping wood is a useful skill to have for any woodworking project and that with practice and patience, anyone can master the technique.

The froe is an more mature resource generally made use of for riving ‘bolts’ of wood into shakes to be utilized on roofs.

In this graphic, I’m riving a little piece of wood into thin strips for use in wooden rings.

The froe was bought at an antique store. The tackle (extra afterwards) and mallet are both equally hickory.
