    HOLMWOOD University 1900–1990
Holmwood Preparatory University was launched in 1900 by Mr Taylor. For the 1st five years tuition took place in a massive property on Barkfield Avenue in Formby in advance of relocating throughout the railway line to Barkfield Lane in 1906. The school remained at this intent built web site right until it shut in 1990.
The school’s purpose was to prepare boys from the ages of 6 to 13 for General public Faculty. Pupils were inspired to start out as “day boys” and board ahead of they attained the age of 10. The main curriculum provided tuition in Latin, Greek, French, Maths, English, Background and Geography with a major emphasis on sports activities and religion. The foundation of the university ethos was laid down by the Rev Gmelin who was instrumental in the making of the faculty chapel of St Nicholas. Mr Batterbury continued to fortify the school’s placement with Mr Royds guiding the school through the tough period of Earth War Two when the Sanatorium and Chapel were wrecked by a German bomb.
The arrival of David Glass as Headmaster in 1948 signalled the start of a new period for the university. David acquired the college and grounds from the Royds household and was joined in 1951 by Noel Hilditch and soon afterwards by Johnny Clegg. The staff of “Tarzy, Cleggy and Slogger” became a formidable pressure, and concerning them, they formed the faculty around the upcoming 20 several years overseeing the most successful and progressive period of time in its heritage.
The college motto “Quis Separabit “ (who will individual) proved prophetic as the group moved the university ahead with a dynamic and enthusiastic vigour. David Glass invested heavily and embarked on an intensive constructing programme such as new school rooms, a science laboratory, an out of doors heated swimming pool, supplemental dormitories and a modern day gymnasium. Holmwood prospered and in the mid 1960s the range of pupils attending the university approached 180 with a staff members of in excess of 20.
David Glass retired in 1971 but retained a financial curiosity in the faculty, sooner or later advertising to Richard Formby. David’s variety two for 20 yrs, Johnny Clegg, took around as Headmaster and for 5 yrs ongoing the effective structure and managing of the college. Johnny phased in the introduction of girls to Holmwood, starting with daughters of the employees and when John Cassidy grew to become Headmaster in 1976, the school at some point grew to become a co-educational institution. In 1984, John bought the school structures, gardens and swimming pool from Richard Formby, with the actively playing fields and the nursery at Netherby continuing to be leased on a rental settlement.
Pupil numbers commenced to dwindle in the 1980’s due to a range of aspects. The military, who used to have powerful one-way links with the faculty, (partly due to the fact of the proximity of Harington Barracks) had withdrawn funding for all boarders who ended up little ones of soldiers serving in Germany and Northern Ireland. In addition, General public faculties ended up providing prep schools inside their possess organisation, and other private colleges in the area had shut their doorways leaving a dearth of fixtures. By 1987 the range of boarders experienced fallen to just more than fifty. The repairs of the principal faculty making, now just about ninety years previous, was a continuous drain on sources creating further more financial pressure.
In 1990, the unfortunate conclusion to close Holmwood was taken and it was about two decades later on that the college was demolished. The land, about ten acres, was marketed for progress. Where Holmwood stood proudly for virtually 90 several years, there is now a housing estate with the only noticeable continues to be of the school’s existence becoming the flag pole that was positioned upcoming to the pavilion. Most likely it would be fitting to fly a flag at half mast.
