The author reflects on her father’s life, who would have celebrated his 99th birthday. Her father had been fostered and then adopted at a young age and grew up in Cheltenham. He initially worked as a radio engineer before marrying the author’s mother in 1947 and moving to Bath, where he worked as an insurance agent for the rest of his life. The author describes him as a resourceful and family-oriented person who loved gardening and electronics. He helped design and build the family home and enjoyed caravan holidays with his family, often to Sandy Bay near Exmouth. Her father was interested in nature and was a fan of the ideas of E. F. Schumacher, the writer of Small is Beautiful: A Study of Economics As If People Mattered. He supported the Liberal Party in politics and was a ham radio enthusiast during his retirement. The author fondly remembers spending time with him in his small orchard and working on woodwork projects in the garage. Her father’s dementia first appeared in his early 70s, and he passed away at the age of 80, leaving the author with many happy memories and lessons learned from him.
