Süleymaniye Mosque

The Süleymaniye Mosque (Turkish: Süleymaniye Camii, Turkish pronunciation: [sylejˈmaːnije]) is an Ottoman imperial mosque situated on the Third Hill of Istanbul, Turkey. It is the greatest mosque in the metropolis, and one particular of the very best-regarded sights of Istanbul.

ARCHITECTURE
Exterior

As with other imperial mosques in Istanbul, the mosque by itself is preceded by a monumental courtyard (avlu) on its west facet. The courtyard at the Süleymaniye is of outstanding grandeur with a colonnaded peristyle with columns of marble, granite and porphyry. At the 4 corners of the courtyard are the 4 minarets, a selection only allowable to mosques endowed by a sultan (princes and princesses could construct two minarets other individuals only a person). The minarets have a full of 10 galleries (serifes), which by custom implies that Suleiman I was the 10th Ottoman sultan.

The main dome is 53 meters superior and has a diameter of 27.5 meters. At the time it was designed, the dome was the best in the Ottoman Empire, when measured from sea degree, but even now decreased from its base and lesser in diameter than that of Hagia Sophia.

The interior of the mosque is practically a square, 59 meters in length and 58 meters in width, forming a single extensive space. The dome is flanked by semi-domes, and to the north and south arches with tympana-filled windows, supported by massive porphyry monoliths. Sinan decided to make a radical architectural innovation to mask the big north-south buttresses wanted to guidance these central piers. He incorporated the buttresses into the partitions of the setting up, with 50 % projecting within and fifty percent projecting outside, and then hid the projections by setting up colonnaded galleries. There is a single gallery inside of the composition, and a two-tale gallery outside the house.

The interior decoration is subtle, with incredibly restrained use of Iznik tiles. The white marble mihrab and mimbar are also straightforward in structure, and woodwork is restrained, with straightforward designs in ivory and mom of pearl.

Advanced

As with other imperial mosques in Istanbul, the Süleymaniye Mosque was intended as a külliye, or elaborate with adjacent constructions to provider the two religious and cultural needs. The authentic intricate consisted of the mosque itself, a medical center (darüşşifa), most important university, general public baths (hamam), a Caravanserai, four Qur’an colleges (medrese), a specialised university for the discovering of hadith, a health-related higher education, and a general public kitchen (imaret) which served food stuff to the weak. Several of these structures are even now in existence, and the previous imaret is now a famous cafe. The previous clinic is now a printing factory owned by the Turkish Military.

In the backyard powering the major mosque there are two mausoleums (türbe) which include the tombs of sultan Suleiman I, his spouse Roxelana (Haseki Hürrem), his daughter Mihrimah, his mom Dilaşub Saliha and his sister Asiye. The sultans Suleiman II, Ahmed II and Safiye (died in 1777), the daughter of Mustafa II, are also buried here.
