chamfered rusticated basement with 6-pane sashes, balustraded methods
up to portico flanked by large urns on plinths. Principal floor
has double half-glazed doors flanked by cross windows in just
portico, casement with pediment both facet. 1st flooring has 3
blind windows in moulded architraves with 2-mild casement in eared
and shouldered architrave both side, modillioned cornice to
balustraded parapet with corner urns, attic block over pediment
also with statues from Temple of Apollo. Flanking one particular-bay wings
and 3-bay pavilions in excess of rusticated basement, tall casements with
cornices, modest casements to attic, all entrance home windows of library
are blind, balustraded parapets with ball finials additional c1904 by D,
Webb. Ideal and left returns of principal block of 10 bays principal
flooring have Venetian windows and cross home windows, all in Gibbs

balustraded actions around basement and balustrade to portico added by
Sir Aston Webb. Company wing on west aspect of north court with 4-
panelled doorway, casements and sashes, the first ground billiard room
over added by D. Webb, diagonally-established outbuilding, quite possibly sport
larder on west facet.
Inside dates from right after 1902 fire, rebuilt applying images of
pre-fireplace inside, plasterwork by Agostini of Bristol, staircase
redesigned with two arms as an alternative of 1, fireplaces in Saloon and
Italian Room introduced from Wavendon 1912. Library of c1800 survived
hearth and retains Colt-Hoare’s fittings shallow-barrel vaulted
ceiling, stained glass in west lunette by F. Eginton, painted
lunette to east by S. Woodforde, fire from Wavendon, oval
niches in excess of doorways with Rysbrack busts. Photo gallery also
intact: white marble fireplace with classical frieze, modillioned
ceiling cornice, woodwork and good up to date furnishings below
and in library specifically intended by Chippendale. Other fittings
incorporate mahogany doors c1905. Even with the 1902 hearth, this property is
important as a Palladian villa in England, set in landscaped
parkland and with the great Stourhead Gardens to the west. The
London banking relatives of Hoares acquired the estate in 1714, the
outdated Stourton House was demolished c1720 and Stourhead constructed
marginally to the north west. Sir Henry Colt Arthur Hoare gave the
greater aspect of the estate to the Nationwide Trust in 1946.
