and photograph gallery pavilions extra 1796-1800 for Colt Hoare, east
portico additional 1840, 1902-06 rebuilding of central block by Doran
Webb and Sir Aston Webb, subsequent 1902 fire. Limestone ashlar,
Lakeland slate hipped roofs, ashlar stacks. Central C18 assortment with
additional wings and pavilions, assistance court on north facet. Two-storey
over basements, 5-window. Tetrastyle portico additional 1840, from
Campbell’s C18 style and design, Composite columns to modillioned cornice and
pediment with direct statue, from the Temple of Apollo (q.v.),
chamfered rusticated basement with 6-pane sashes, balustraded ways
up to portico flanked by significant urns on plinths. Principal flooring
has double 50 percent-glazed doors flanked by cross home windows inside
portico, casement with pediment either facet. Initial ground has 3
blind windows in moulded architraves with 2-light casement in eared
and shouldered architrave either facet, modillioned cornice to
balustraded parapet with corner urns, attic block over pediment
also with statues from Temple of Apollo. Flanking one particular-bay wings
and 3-bay pavilions above rusticated basement, tall casements with
cornices, modest casements to attic, all entrance home windows of library
are blind, balustraded parapets with ball finials included c1904 by D,
Webb. Right and remaining returns of primary block of ten bays principal
floors have Venetian windows and cross home windows, all in Gibbs
surrounds, first floors have ten cross windows in moulded
architraves, fantastic guide rainwater heads dated 1722. Library south
pavilion has French home windows with lunette over to remaining return, 12-
pane and 6-pane sashes to rear, image gallery to north has blind
windows to facet and to rear, linking wings have 12-pane sashes.
Rear of main block has recessed distyle in antis to start with floor
portico with pediment and projecting 2-bay wings, all by D. Webb
wing casements in Gibbs surrounds to principal ground, central
spherical-arched French home windows to rusticated recessed entrance,
balustraded actions around basement and balustrade to portico added by
Sir Aston Webb. Provider wing on west side of north courtroom with 4-
panelled door, casements and sashes, the to start with ground billiard area
more than added by D. Webb, diagonally-established outbuilding, perhaps activity
larder on west facet.
Interior dates from soon after 1902 hearth, rebuilt using images of
pre-fireplace interior, plasterwork by Agostini of Bristol, staircase
redesigned with two arms rather of just one, fireplaces in Saloon and
Italian Space introduced from Wavendon 1912. Library of c1800 survived
hearth and retains Colt-Hoare’s fittings shallow-barrel vaulted
ceiling, stained glass in west lunette by F. Eginton, painted
lunette to east by S. Woodforde, hearth from Wavendon, oval
niches about doorways with Rysbrack busts. Image gallery also
intact: white marble fire with classical frieze, modillioned
ceiling cornice, woodwork and great present-day furnishings listed here
and in library specially made by Chippendale. Other fittings
involve mahogany doorways c1905. Irrespective of the 1902 hearth, this residence is
critical as a Palladian villa in England, set in landscaped
parkland and with the good Stourhead Gardens to the west. The
London banking household of Hoares obtained the estate in 1714, the
old Stourton Property was demolished c1720 and Stourhead crafted
a bit to the north west. Sir Henry Colt Arthur Hoare gave the
increased element of the estate to the Nationwide Rely on in 1946.
