St Mary-le-Bow – Durham Heritage Centre

A Town Parish

For the reason that Durham was at first a monastic Cathedral, the town by itself was divided up into parishes, with parish church buildings serving the inhabitants of the town.

St Mary-le-Bow was a person.

Most of the present-day church setting up dates from the 1670s, and was developed to replace an more mature church found on the internet site, which collapsed, along with a city gateway that stood adjacent to it, in 1637.

The tower is a little bit later on, dating from 1702.

Levels of Record

For the reason that the latest Church is a reconstruction of an more mature constructing, it brings together aspects of distinctive dates. The roof, for instance, dates from the 15th century. The picket display screen prior to the altar dates from 1707, when the wooden panelling dates amongst 1731 and 1742. There are two baptismal fonts, 1 courting from the 18th and the other from the 19th century.

It is prevalent for community structures, such as church buildings, to go by periodic refurbishment campaigns, and receive gifts from time to time. This church is no exception.
