£20,000 Countrywide Church buildings Believe in grant to help fund a challenge to make the making stable and watertight, which include urgent repairs to the roof.
The tower, the oldest element of the church, dates from 1350 and was constructed by Sir John Ward, a friend of the Black Prince, with whom he fought at Crecy. The spire was included in 1778 and then reconstructed in 1841. In May possibly 1975 a big hearth destroyed most of the nave, the inside woodwork, the roof, and the bells. A new interior in just the shell of the 19th century walls was then constructed.
The church is a unique space, on whose ambiance of quiet and simplicity a lot of men and women, comment. The flavour of the church is typified by the “Burnt Madonna” sculpture in the Lady Chapel: ahead of the fire, a wood determine of the Virgin Mary shaped part of an undistinguished Edwardian Rood Display right after the fire she was found, charred but recognisable in the rubble, now invested with a unique creative and non secular electricity. This parable of destruction that uncovers deeply hidden goodness and existence is a distinctively Christian plan which the church and the Burnt Madonna, embodies.
