St Mary, Salcott-cum-Virley, Essex
We left Tollesbury on the coastline and turned towards Colchester, with the prospect of a range of tiny church buildings in fast succession, not the very least because we had been now moving into earthquake region. The fantastic Essex earthquake of April 1884 ruined hundreds of structures like wrecking a dozen church buildings, some of which had been fully ruined. There have been two church buildings in this article, but only a person was fixed, the previous Virley parish church remaining as a picturesque spoil in someone’s backyard garden. Regardless of the name, this is just a single tiny village divided by a stream, and they have not been separate parishes for a century or extra, but the BoE still insists on giving them independent entries.
Open up. This church was the actual star of my working day. It is stunning. Over and above the wire grill the inner doorways were held open up with hefty weights, and this is an utterly delightful Substantial Anglo-catholic rustic church, reminding me of Calthorpe in Norfolk. It is charming. Statues and candles, yes, but also straightforward woodwork and brick flooring. There is a poster advertising it as a Coffee Position, apparently a nearby initiative the place any individual out for a wander or regardless of what can go into a making and make themselves a cup of coffee or tea and sit down for a relaxation. All the equipment for performing so was at the again of the church.
The complete church apart from the tower was wrecked in the earthquake, and was rebuilt some 10 many years later (the good news is late ample to escape the worst excesses of Victorianism). A mark of how Higher this church continue to is today is that the millennium window depicts the Roman Catholic symbol of the millennium. This was my favorite church of the day, and there were even now a number of good kinds to arrive.
Incidentally, the pre-earthquake Virley church is the 1 so evocatively explained in Sabine Baring-Gould’s splendid Mehalah.
