St Mary, Salcott-cum-Virley, Essex
We left Tollesbury on the coast and turned towards Colchester, with the prospect of a number of little churches in swift succession, not least due to the fact we have been now getting into earthquake country. The wonderful Essex earthquake of April 1884 wrecked hundreds of buildings including wrecking a dozen church buildings, some of which had been wholly wrecked. There had been two church buildings below, but only 1 was fixed, the previous Virley parish church remaining as a picturesque damage in someone’s backyard garden. Even with the name, this is just just one little village divided by a stream, and they have not been different parishes for a century or additional, but the BoE still insists on offering them independent entries.
Open up. This church was the authentic star of my working day. It is beautiful. Past the wire grill the internal doors ended up held open with major weights, and this is an totally delightful Significant Anglo-catholic rustic church, reminding me of Calthorpe in Norfolk. It is attractive. Statues and candles, indeed, but also simple woodwork and brick flooring. There is a poster advertising and marketing it as a Coffee Position, evidently a community initiative in which any individual out for a stroll or no matter what can go into a creating and make on their own a cup of coffee or tea and sit down for a rest. All the equipment for performing so was at the again of the church.
The entire church aside from the tower was destroyed in the earthquake, and was rebuilt some ten a long time later (thankfully late sufficient to escape the worst excesses of Victorianism). A mark of how Superior this church even now is nowadays is that the millennium window depicts the Roman Catholic image of the millennium. This was my favorite church of the working day, and there had been still several great kinds to occur.
