SS Peter & Paul, Barkestone

The church of SS Peter & Paul at Barkestone was substantially rebuilt in the early 19th century leaving the medieval west tower and spire and pieces of the ironstone chancel linked by a new nave in contrasting white stone.

Within the 19th century rebuilding is even a lot more clear, with the entire interior seemingly of this time (though the nave columns are probable the primary types). Even with this decline of antiquity there are essential late medieval survivals below in the exceptional woodwork of the lectern, produced from two exquisitely carved former bench-ends (decorated with high-quality carvings of St James & St John the Baptist beneath canopies, amongst the pretty very best examples of late medieval wooden carving). There is a even further bench in the chancel with carved figures on the arm rests. The modest chancel display screen is also ancient as is the worn 14th century effigy in a recess in the north aisle.

The church is normally held locked outside of companies, but regardless of its extensive rebuilding is however value a check out.
