South Transept Window, Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge

The terrific south window of the transept is the most significant of all the Morris & Burne Jones home windows in the chapel and dates from 1873 in the last decades of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (refounded soon later on as Morris & CO.). All the most important figures are from patterns by Edward Burne Jones apart from two by William Morris (who also made all but 1 of the angels in the traceries).

Jesus University might not be the oldest of Cambridge’s faculties, but no matter it can continue to boast the oldest chapel. The current cruciform making was previously the monastic church of St Mary & St Radegund, a convent of nuns founded in 1157. This was dissolved in 1496 when the existing higher education was founded on the identical site by Bishop John Alcock with the former convent church tailored to use as the existing school chapel, which concerned numerous modifications to its framework such as the demolition of many pieces including the greater section of the nave. The current chapel is hence a decreased version of the initial church, but it is nonetheless distinctly different in kind from other school chapels, generating its former monastic use all the extra apparent.

1 techniques the chapel from the north west by means of a cloister (substantially altered from its unique condition) and it is immediately clear that much of the nave has been changed by university properties, decreasing it to comparable proportions to the transepts. The central tower is sq. and fairly squat, a late medieval rebuild right after the basis of the university.

Inside of the truncated nave there would be a sense of starkness from the basic white partitions were it not for the splashes of color from the windows and the richly embellished ceiling, all stunning illustrations of Pre-Raphaelite artwork by William Morris and his circle, the chapel windows being mostly loaded with a sequence of figures from cartoons by Burne Jones. The effect is prosperous and gratifying and has breathed new life into this historic setting up. The choir beyond is partially hid by abundant woodwork, the chancel monitor and the elaborately carved stalls which keep some noteworthy examples of late medieval carving. The choir by itself is a handsome illustration of Early English architecture with slender lancet home windows, these remaining filled with Hardman glass, the only windows not adorned with Morris & Co layouts.

Jesus Faculty Chapel is just one of my absolute favourites, a delightful constructing with some lovely glass. Fortunately it looks to be a single of the a lot more customer welcoming faculties in Cambridge having always discovered it possible to wander all around freely while by some means preventing the crowds of holidaymakers that specified other Cambridge schools draw in.
