The author of this content is describing their experience with finishing a piece of maple wood. They used 2 thin coats of 3lbs cut shellac from Zinssler (machine mix from Home Depot) to bring out the holographic shimmer of the wood, which looks beautiful when tilted back and forth in the light. They had previously tested teak oil on a scrap of the same maple wood, but found that it did the opposite of popping the grain and instead made the colors muddy and indistinct. The author is planning to use a topcoat of spray-on semi-gloss spar urethane to protect the wood and maintain its luster.
