Schulz-Neef Residence

The Schulz-Neef household is one of the oldest households in the Whittier Neighborhood. Its steeply-gabled roof, ornamental woodwork and pointed finials stand out as a fantastic illustration of the Gothic Revival architectural design, a rarity in Denver residences.

Crafted for German immigrant R. Ernst Schulz, a bookeeper at the German National Lender and true estate investor, the initial residents also involved outstanding architect Frederick C. Eberley and household.
The dwelling then grew to become home to Max Neef and family members just after his brother Fred (whose home on Grove Road is also a Denver Landmark) acquired it at public auction in 1883.
Max and Fred Neef had been liquor and tobacco wholesalers as properly as saloon owners. They later on owned and operated the Neef Brothers Brewery, a person of the premier in the West. Max Neef died in the dwelling in 1921, but his spouse and children continued to stay there until the passing of his spouse Carrie in 1945.
The home was briefly transformed to 4 apartments, but returned to single-family use by The Nonakas, a Japanese loved ones displaced for the duration of W.W.II who lived there from 1946-1967.
In the 1970s and 1980s, this was the residence of Reynelda Muse, Colorado’s very first African-American and initially female information anchor. Her spouse Daniel Muse was the Colorado Assistant Lawyer Normal, and later served as Town Lawyer of Denver.
