St Mary, Salcott-cum-Virley, Essex
We still left Tollesbury on the coast and turned in the direction of Colchester, with the prospect of a variety of modest church buildings in fast succession, not minimum simply because we had been now coming into earthquake country. The fantastic Essex earthquake of April 1884 wrecked hundreds of buildings together with wrecking a dozen church buildings, some of which ended up entirely wrecked. There were being two church buildings here, but only just one was fixed, the former Virley parish church remaining as a picturesque ruin in someone’s yard. In spite of the title, this is just a single small village divided by a stream, and they have not been separate parishes for a century or a lot more, but the BoE nevertheless insists on offering them different entries.
Open up. This church was the real star of my working day. It is beautiful. Over and above the wire grill the internal doors were being held open up with major weights, and this is an completely pleasant High Anglo-catholic rustic church, reminding me of Calthorpe in Norfolk. It is wonderful. Statues and candles, certainly, but also basic woodwork and brick flooring. There is a poster promotion it as a Coffee Place, apparently a community initiative in which anybody out for a walk or what ever can go into a making and make on their own a cup of espresso or tea and sit down for a relaxation. All the products for accomplishing so was at the again of the church.
The total church apart from the tower was ruined in the earthquake, and was rebuilt some 10 years afterwards (luckily late more than enough to escape the worst excesses of Victorianism). A mark of how Large this church nevertheless is currently is that the millennium window depicts the Roman Catholic image of the millennium. This was my favorite church of the day, and there ended up continue to several very good ones to arrive.
